Infographics quiz
What type of information
graphic would best illustrate the following? Name the type of graphic you
select, describe or illustrate how it would look, and explain why it works.
1. Compare the number of
worshipers of Christianity, Buddhism, Islam, and Judaism in the United States
and in the world.
-
A pie chart or bar chart would best explain this situation.
-
A bar chart and pie
chart effectively illustrate comparison. According to the JTC 300 class
notes, “Bar charts, pie charts or fever charts are
effective visuals for your writing when numbers are involved”.
-
A
pie chart is used to show proportions of a whole. It is very useful for figures
that relate to a larger sum. In this
situation, we will have two pie charts.
One pie chart will contain the percentages of each
religion in the USA and the other will contain the
percentages of each religion in the world.
Each pie chart will have four
slices and clearly label as Christianity,
Buddhism, Islam, and Judaism. Each segment of the pie chart is
a percentage and the total amount of a whole pie chart must equal 100%. The slices, regardless of their individual
sizes, can be moved around within the pie pan, we still have the whole pie. This makes easy to get a feel for the
relationship between component values when they are placed in a pie chart.
2. Trace the median family income in the United States over
the past three decades.
-
A
fever or line chart or bar graph would best explain this
situation.
-
Line charts or bar
charts visually depict change. According
to the JTC 300 class notes, “a fever or line graph shows change over time. It
can be one particular thing or several, where you plot them on the graphs, then
draw a line to show the change over a certain period. You are not so much
comparing one thing to another but rather showing how something increased,
decreased or stayed the same.”
-
In
this situation, we plot the median income over the past
three decades on the graph and then draw a line or connect the dots to give us some idea of the relationship of
consecutive points. A line chart is better at implying a trend. This type of charts can be used to show how the value of a variable changes over
time.
3. Show weather patterns for
the month of December in Colorado for the past 10 years.
-
A
bar chart or line chart would best explain this
situation.
-
Bar charts compare distinct items or
show single items at distinct intervals. According to the JTC 300 class notes,
“a bar char compare
two or more things. Label the bottom portion with the time period or group, and
the side with the numbers you want to illustrate. Be sure to provide a key
telling what each bar represents.”
-
For a bar chart, we lay out with
categories (years) along the vertical axis, and weather patterns or values
for the month of December in Colorado for the past 10 years along the horizontal axis. The bars are horizontally placed
on the page. Bar charts are useful for comparing data items that are in
competition, so it makes sense to place the longest bars on top and the others
in descending order beneath the longest one.
-
Column charts are like bar charts
because they compare distinct items or show single items at distinct intervals.
But for column chart, the bars are
vertical on the chart. We have the
categories (years) arranged along the horizontal axis and the weather patterns
or values for the month of December in
Colorado for the past 10 years along the
vertical axis. Column charts displays how values change over discrete units of
time.
4. Describe the uniform of a
-
A
logo would best explain this situation.
-
A logo is more than just a pretty
image for customers to look at while they use a product or service. It is a
symbol that determines how people feel about that particular company or team
and team players.
-
The uniform will have name and
number of a professional
hockey player, so that his or her fans can easy
spot him or her in the field. The
uniform also will have a name of the team or company that a professional
hockey player will be represented.
5. Provide the history of the
motion picture industry in the United States.
-
A
timeline would best explain this situation.
-
According
to the JTC 300 class not, “timeline, with or without pictures, can give a nice
visual perspective. Perhaps you need to quickly show the history of something
like water rights in a certain state or scientific progress in some area. A
timeline can be a very effective way “catching up” on background.”
-
The
purpose of this timeline is to provide the readers with details of company’s
history and show trends of what happened from the start to the end. Timeline visually represents a sequence of events that
happen over time, allowing users to understand the visualized data quickly and
effectively.
